Bienvenue dans l'Himalaya / Welcome in Himalaya

We arrive almost at the same time with Luca (Joel’s brother) and me. Jo waits for us. A lot of taxi wait for the travelers front of the airport and lot solicit us. We take one of them; a guide comes with us and tries to sale us his treks saying it’s not possible to do a trek in mountains without guide. Bullshit!!! Of course we can do it without pay a guide and lost a lot of money.
We arrive at the “Fireflies” backpacker, which I recommend a lot. People there are so friendly an nice. Luca brought a bottle of alcohol from Switzerland; we share it with some travelers and Nepalese. Two Nepalese come with us for buying cigarettes and we follow them to have diner. They take us in a typical restaurant in the edge of a path. The food is excellent and we try the local alcohol. We paid 12us dollars for a meal for 5 persons plus drinks. After that they drive us in another small street to drink a hot beer (Tumba), other specialty of the country. Then we go to a club with music live and the band sings some cover and some Nepalese’s song. Great ambiance, Nepalese know how doing party! We spent a really great day thanks to the Nepalese and it was the first time since the beginning of the trip that we have a real .
Two days after we leave to Pokhara (800r per pax for a tourist bus, departure 7am). There we meet Fazby, a friend from Adelaide who lives here since 3 month. He helps us to buy our trek permits (40us dollars). We planned to trek the day after but because of intoxication we’re stay in a bed all the day! So we go after this bad day of sickness.
We take two local buses in the city to get the bus station where we can take the bus to Naya Pul (310r), the end of the Annapurna circuit and start for some others. So first day we start by Naya Pul to stop to Hile. We had to walk maybe 3:30 hours. We take the first guesthouse, bad idea because the demoiselle there doesn’t want to give us extra blankets and there is no place where they do a fire, so we can’t dry our clothes. Second day, maybe one of the hardest in my life ahah. We walk 6 hours and the path is just stairs. We climb 1200 meters to arrive in Goripani which is at 2700 meters of altitude. And this time we don’t do the same mistake and go to see several guesthouses before choose one. It’s possible to bargains the room free if you eat at their place. They make money with the food. Here there is a big wood burner in the middle of the living room, hot shower and we can dry our clothes, the paradise! Third day we wake up at 5 am to climb to Poon Hill at 3200 meters of altitude. We’re waiting for the sunrise with maybe minus 10 degrees. The landscape is wonderful!
All the colors are here and the sun starts to illuminate the Annapurna’ summits. The mountains are so high and for as far as the eye can see. We go back to the gueshouse for a breakfast and start our descent to Tatopani. We walk 4:30 hours. One more time, that’s just stairs, obviously easier and faster to go down but that will offer you some stiffness the day after. Arriving at Tatopani we find a hostel where there are about fifteen travelers from every nationality. We celebrate Christmas Eve together.
The day after, towards to the hot springs close to the village. After these three days of cold and humidity that’s just perfect to be in water at 40 degrees. Then we leave Tatopani with a bus (300r for the tourists and 250 for the locals) forwards to Beni. The bus the scariest I took in my life. We pass by some path so close to the ravine with an incredible high. Then we change bus in Beni to go to Pokara (210r). We spend the night in Pokara then we leave the morning after to Kathmandu (500r). Our bus stop after three hour drive and the driver ask us to get out and get in in the other bus behind us. Except that the other bus is full, so they put us in the roof with the bags. Despite a lack of security and the little fear at the beginning, it will be the most beautiful ride in my life. We’ve got an amazing view on the mountains, the river, everything… so we did a 4 hours journey on the roof of a bus to Kathmandu.
There we take back our habits in our “Nepalese’s home” the Fireflies and the day after it will be a shopping day. Then the day after I take my flight to Bangkok while the boys take their flight forwards Lukla to see the Everest, but that is their story.
